Election day eve roundup
April 27, 2025
Happy Election Day Eve, to those who celebrate. Tomorrow's the big day, and many are suspecting we will wake up on Tuesday morning to a Liberal majority government. How do I feel about this? Meh.
The Good
If there's one thing that will unify many Canadians coast-to-coast-to-coast, it is that we will likely not have a Conservative government. That's something to be happy about. Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives have run a truly awful campaign, one that will be studies for decades for its awfulness. Completely misreading the room, Poilievre's Conservative platform was FAR-right. It included promises to ban trans people from using spaces in federal buildings that align with their gender. It promised to punish pro-Palestinian protestors, and maybe even deport them if possible; a clear echo of Trump's policies. It promised to defund the CBC and force Canadians to watch even more commercials. In short, it was full of bat shit crazy nonsense. I'll be happy to see Canadians (hopefully) reject it.
In other good news, Pierre Poilievre may even lose his own prized riding of Carleton. That would be nice for us, wouldn't it? It would be wonderful to see that loser have to get a job for the first time in his life, although it would surely be in consulting or something dumb like that. In any case, I wonder if he will concede gracefully. Will he try to do Conservative January 6? It remains to be seen.
To finish off the "good news" category of this round-up, it is looking like a few NDP candidates might actually win. Without naming any, so as not to jinx it, I'm hoping the NDP MPs who do win are able to work together to rebuild the party. I have hope for the future of the NDP, even if nobody else does.
The Bad
The Liberals and Mark Carney suck. They aren't the worst ever, but they suck. HWAD Liberal candidate JP Danko is an excellent example of how much the Liberals suck. A Conservative at heart, then-counsellor Danko requested Doug Ford to invoke the notwithstanding clause to clear encampments out of public parks in defiance of the Supreme Court. That alone should be disqualifying as a candidate. Carney's plans for the economy will benefit the rich and hurt the poor, and we'll like it, too. Ugh.
The Ugly
All three major(?) parties are unified by a common lack of action on the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The NDP has the best record, but it is far from perfect. In one of his first moves, Mark Carney appointed genocidal maniac Marco Mendicino as his chief of staff, signalling his position on the issue. Carney accidentally acknowledged the genocide at a rally, but then walked it back. The Conservatives are actively in favour of the genocide, and cheer for it any chance they get. I am disgusted by our leaders in general.
How did I vote; how should you vote?
I voted for the NDP. Shocker. I think everyone should too. I am ambivalent about strategic voting. Although Tories do not stand a chance in my riding, I might vote NDP even if they did.
Let's all take a moment to pray for the future of this country; it's not looking good. Peace out.
